Uniquely dedicated to the appreciation and integration of Japanese musical instruments in Western classical music, Kyo-Shin-An Arts commissions and produces new works and concerts that highlight the outstanding virtuosity of the koto, shakuhachi and shamisen.

Spring Sounds, Spring Seas

A ground-breaking, enhanced content CD from Kyo-Shin-An Arts and Orchestra of the Swan featuring Shakuhachi and Koto with Chamber Orchestra.For release in late spring 2012.

Hogaku & Orchestra

A multi-year commissioning initiative with the Orchestra of the Swan in Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK. This project launched in May 2011, with a stunning premiere of Daron Hagen's Koto Concerto: Genji, and continues in 2012 with a Concertante by James Nyoraku Schlefer followed by a Shakuhachi Concerto by Paul Moravec in 2013.

Kammerraku

Literally: Chamber music. Kyo-Shin-An Arts will offer a full program of new works for string quartet with Japanese instruments by Daron Hagen, Paul Moravec, Somei Satoh and James Nyoraku Schlefer. The premiere will take place on May 5, 2012 at the World Financial Center, followed by an intimate concert on May 6 at the Tenri Cultural Institute.

Koto & Guitar Duo

Kyo-Shin-An Arts has received a 2011 commissioning award from the New York State Council on the Arts for guitarist and composer Benjamin Verdery. Ben's duo for koto and guitar will premiere at Tenri on November 17, 2012.

"Here, Again"

Composer Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez' new work in one movement for the Colorado String Quartet with shakuhachi. This piece is a Meet the Composer commission. Next performance will be April 21, 2012 at the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage as part of the 100th Anniversary of the famous DC Cherry Blossom Festival.

Music for Dance

A site-adaptive collaboration with PearsonWidrig DanceTheater, Oashisu (Oasis) premiered to much acclaim in October 2010 at the Tenri Cultural Institute. It features five dancers with music for koto, shakuhachi, cello and percussion by James Nyoraku Schlefer.
